The best way to know any city is by heading out with the sole purpose of photographing it and its people. It makes you extra motivated to look.
That is why I keep going out to hunt for my photos, even though I am from Barcelona. Street photography obliges you to change the parameters of your camera all the time: speed, ISO and depth of field.
Sometimes the image is gone in a second, sometimes it is the exact opposite. You discover a corner, a place, a special light and you have to wait, and wait, and wait until something happens.
The man with the dogs looks to me like a strong image, so I follow him for an hour and a half until he passes the nun (above). On the contrary, the photo with the two lovers kissing each other (below) was happening right in front of me. So I kept drinking beers with my friends and taking shots until I thought I got it right.
Patience is one of the best weapons in street photography. Another is self confidence. Do not hide. Raise your camera and get close. I find that most of the time people really do not care. We are very used to cameras nowadays, so use that to your advantage.
For me, it is very important not to ask for permission because that will ruin the moment. I like to go out with a single camera and my 24/70 zoom so that I am comfortable. This arrangement helps me cover most of the moments worth shooting.
