The small town of Harwich has three harbors, of which Wychmere Harbor is the most popular with visitors for its scenic views. This harbor was once known as Salt Pond and had no opening to the ocean until a canal was dredged in 1889.

Cape Cod is a wonderful place to take photos, especially in summer. The air is sometimes so fresh and invigorating that it smells sweet.

There are an unlimited number of planned and serendipitous photo opportunities. During a day of roaming around on Cape Cod, I stopped at a public park with free parking (above). It looked down on water and the grass was perfect, with a few well-spaced, photogenic trees. I also had the luck of finding a friendly couple sitting on lawn chairs and wearing stylish hats. They also had a curious dog.

I asked if I could take their photo while they were relaxing. I often ask instead of just taking so I can also request a few adjustments. Here, I wanted to de-clutter the image slightly by putting their things behind the chairs.

My trick to get animals to pause and look is to bite my lips and suck in air. That makes a squeaking sound, which almost always works. I gave the couple my card and told them to email me for a copy.

The Route 28 Diner interior (below) also begged to be taken. I was again lucky enough to find a couple sitting in just the right booth. Here, my motto was “shoot first, smile and apologize as needed”.
