Cape Town’s vineyards and wine estates are deservedly famous. The picturesque towns and vineyards of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl outside the city merit more than a day trip, but don’t those in Cape Town.
The Constantia Winelands, 15 minutes from the city center on the southeast slopes of Table Mountain, are South Africa’s oldest vineyards. Dating back to 1685, they include award-winning estates including Klein Constantia and Silvermist.
The largest is Groot Constantia, which boasts classic Cape Dutch architecture, wine tastings, fine dining and cellar tours. Each estate has its own highlights; from the white Semillon wine at Klein Constantia to the Buitenverwachting’s Chardonnay. Stay here and you can look forward to luxury accommodation, delicious breakfasts and gourmet picnic lunches. Having your own wheels is recommended, as you can then hop from vineyard to vineyard along the Constantia Wine Route. The area is also close to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, while Hout Bay and Muizenberg are both only a 20-minute drive away.
Best places to stay
With its lush garden, classic decorated rooms (with modern amenities!), sunken pool and proximity to a range of trendy shops, The Last Word Constantia is a favorite among visitors of the area. The same goes for Nova Constantia Boutique Residence, a 5-star boutique guesthouse which is close to the wine estates and offers fantastic spa treatment.
