Hello Capitol Hill
East of Downtown is Capitol Hill, the center and beating heart of Washington DC, so-called for the huge, domed congressional building which dominates its skyline. It’s home to the United States Capitol, the Library of Congress, and the Supreme Court of the United States, but don’t let that fool you into thinking this area is just for senators and civil servants. Capitol Hill has a genuine neighborhood feel with its colorful houses, eclectic restaurants, street markets, and vintage and second-hand shops. It’s also home to the Botanic Garden and the Beaux Arts wonder that is Union Station. Head to Eastern Market (closed Mondays) for local produce and handmade crafts, and at weekends, an open-air flea market sets up outside. For bars and restaurants, head to 8th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue SE in Barracks Row while hotel bars with rooftop lounges offer fantastic views. At Capitol Hill itself, ask about passes to see Congress in action, explore its beautiful gardens, and picnic by the Bartholdi Fountain. You can also take a self-guided tour of the Supreme Court. Whether you're a politico or a foodie, Capitol Hill will surprise you.
