Hello Samaná Peninsula

Much of what makes the Dominican Republic such a beautiful, inspiring country is emphatically in evidence on the Samaná Peninsula. Gorgeous beaches, thundering waterfalls, lush rainforests, sleepy villages, an abundance of wildlife – to explore the Samaná Peninsula is to experience the Dominican Republic at its most unhurried and visually diverse. There are fewer resorts here than elsewhere on the island, but the beaches are no less perfect; those found in and around the charming town of Las Galeras are particularly pretty. Make your way to Punta Balandra for views out over the Atlantic and Samaná Bay, where you might even see humpback whales breaching in the distance. You could also book yourself onto a whale watching excursion to see them up close or, if you left your sea legs back at home, head inland instead. Parque Nacional Los Haitises lies across the bay from the peninsula, complete with rainforests and mangroves, or you could hike up to El Limón Waterfall and have a swim in the plunge pool below. There are plenty of simple, more understated pleasures to be had in Samaná Peninsula, too: take time to get to know its villages and villagers, and in the evenings enjoy a night out along the Malecón de Samaná, or join a local crowd with a drink and dance in a merengue-filled bar in Las Galeras.
