Sometimes I kiss my tripod
I am not particularly fond of using a tripod because you have to carry it around and once you have set it up it restricts your movement. But it does allow you to capture wonderful images you would otherwise not be able to take.
Why good photos always come back to faces
While shooting on Santorini, I was reminded that you really get to know a destination through the people that live and work there.
When photographing cities, start with an overview
When I arrive in an unfamiliar city for a photography job, I stick to my winning two-step process. Number one: find an overview. Number two: zoom in on a detail.
When telling an urban story, include people
Starting photographers often make the mistake of telling an urban story where buildings are the stars, leaving out the inhabitants and consequently creating a set of images that lack soul.
Sometimes the photo you don’t like is also important
Brussels is one of the most interesting European cities I’ve seen. I didn’t immediately fall in love with it but it conquered my heart in time.
Shoot shallow and focus on the eyes for great portraits
I had a great time shooting in the Aegean region of Turkey and I would love to go back.
Start early, and finish late, for the best evening photos
In Budapest, I'm reminded once more that night shots can bring out the best in a city: dirty buildings, scaffolding and litter all fade into the shadows as the city’s lights begin to work their magic.
What’s luck got to do, got to do with it?
After 15 years of travel photography, the concept of luck has taken on a whole new meaning. Is waking up early and climbing a mountain to reach the summit – only to find an overcast sky that obscures the sunrise – bad luck?
How a year's work can make you a better photographer
Given the opportunity, I love to go back to locations to re-shoot them in a new way, in other seasons or at different times of the day.
There's more to Italy than Rome
Rome is where modern Europe began and its beauties are vast, from the banks of the Tiber to the Colosseum, St Peter's Basillica and the Roman Forum.
