Teurastamo (The Abattoir) was constructed in 1933 as a model slaughterhouse but today is under gradual renovation as a multifunction urban space. The first restaurants and shops have already opened, while its garden is being planted with fruit trees and other crop-yielding plants.

Helsinki – Photo Tip How joining the fun will make you a better photographer

Photographing landscapes and trees in a country where nature is as ubiquitous as in Finland is fantastic. But I prefer people, because people offer many more characters and rare moments that are different and unique.

In Helsinki, especially in summer, street photography becomes a fun adventure. It is like a photographic safari in a permanent carnival. Good weather and sun call forth miracles in the minds of people who, frankly, seem affected by a great folly. They dress up and indulge their fantasies in the many festivals, concerts and outdoor events that are organized in the city.

I guess it is the long winter that makes them so happy in summer to smile at the camera, posing as if they were really on a catwalk. It is easy to make a connection between the photographer and the photographed.

Using long lenses sometimes makes it easier to get a picture but I always say that 50mm, or even 35mm, are the necessary lenses for proper eye contact.

When I shouted at Marilyn to “Smile, Marilyn, smile!”, it turned the whole scene (above) into a kind of act for the press. I was the real paparazzi and she truly believed she was Monroe.
