Hello Kaartinkaupunki / Katajanokka
Kaartinkaupunki is a great spot for admiring the mix of architectural styles for which Helsinki is famous. Gothic churches, Neo-Gothic museums, Neoclassical theaters – Kaartinkaupunki is as architecturally rich and diverse as neighborhoods get. There's no better way to get to know an area than with a visit to a local market, and at Helsinki Market Square you can find one of the city's best. Visit in early October to immerse yourself in the world of herring, when the market plays host to the annual Helsinki Baltic Herring Fair. If you've never tried salted, pickled or marinated herring before, then early October in Helsinki is the time to do it. The neighborhood is a good base from which to set and explore the rest of Helsinki, too. To the north is Kruununhaka, home to Senate Square, Helsinki Cathedral and the statue of Emperor Alexander II. Cross the bridge to explore Katajanokka, which is just one of Helsinki's 315 islands.
