Hello Latin Quarter
The name of the Latin Quarter in Paris derives from the fact that prior to the French Revolution, international students at the Sorbonne University were only allowed to communicate with one another in Latin. You won’t hear much of the language being spoken in the Latin Quarter these days, but the influence of the student population has resulted in plenty of trendy bistros and restaurants, characterful cafes, and popular nightclubs popping up in its place. The Panthéon is well worth a visit if not for the magnificent building itself than to see the enormous tombstones of many of France’s national heroes, including Voltaire, Emile Zola, and Marie Curie. Head down to the legendary Shakespeare and Company bookshop afterward if your visit to the Panthéon has whetted your appetite for learning more about French and Parisian history; the store featured in Woody Allen’s 2011 film, Midnight in Paris.
