New Zealand – Been There Hobbit locations galore

The Lord of the Rings trilogy gave international recognition to New Zealand’s remarkable landscape. The two-part Hobbit epic was another massive pair of adverts for the country's tourism industry, just as the first three films have been.

Queenstown – famous for its adventure activities – is also a good central base for visiting many of the dramatic Lord of the Ring locations on South Island. These include The Remarkables (you have to love that name) mountain range and the native forests, lakes, Ice Age glaciers and plunging fjords that were stand-ins for Isengard, the Misty Mountains or the Ford of Bruinen.

Closeburn, Paradise and Mavora Lakes, for example, were the setting for the final scenes of The Fellowship of the Ring and the area around Poolburn provided suitably grand scenery for the Kingdom of Rohan.

The closeness of unspoilt nature to accessible towns was the attraction for the film-makers, as is the lack of human activity: no farms, fence posts or even aircraft contrails spoil the shot. Roads in these remote area can be rough and hiring a four-wheel-drive is recommended. Even better is to go with one of the many local companies that now offer location guides, including spectacular heli-tours.
