The Opéra area sits neatly between the Montmartre to the north and Le Marais to the south. The neighborhood could be easily overlooked in your haste to get from one to the other, but to do so would be an unfortunate oversight indeed. The 2nd arrondissement in Opéra is the city’s smallest and one of its most characterful, complete with covered shopping arcades, trendy boutique shops and one of the oldest open-air markets in Paris. It is here and in the 9th arrondissement to the north of the 2nd that you can also find classy department stores, many excellent restaurants and several great little museums, too. The Musée de la Vie Romantique is dedicated to the art and literature of the Romantic period, and also boasts an idyllic garden courtyard where you can enjoy a drink and take in the tranquil surroundings. Spending a bit of time here will provide you with the perfect contrast to the noise and excitement of taking in a show at the nearby Moulin Rouge.
