Enjoying an elevated position above the city and Table Bay – and at the foot of Table Mountain – Oranjezicht is one of Cape Town’s more affluent city center suburbs in what is called the City Bowl. The neighborhood sits on what used to be Oranjezicht farm: an expanse of land which stretched to the Mount Nelson Hotel in the suburb of Gardens and once provided fresh ingredients to the residents of the Castle of Good Hope. Even now, one of the neighborhood's best-known attractions is its innovative Oranjezicht City Farm, a much-talked-about, transformative community garden with sweeping views over Cape Town. Visitors are welcome; check the website for times.
While it's true that this is one of the city’s quieter suburbs, if you’re looking for a peaceful stay near Table Mountain National Park and a smattering of good cafes and restaurants, Oranjezicht is an excellent choice. It’s also just a 10/15-minute drive to Table Mountain Aerial Cableway (book in advance). After the glorious views from the cable car, you’re free to explore the mountain at your leisure where the views from the top make it hard to leave.
