Stories about Puerto Rico

When photographing, always look behind you
Festivals are a photographer’s dream, combining color, movement, culture, history and people into an opportunity to capture beautiful travel images.

Puerto Rico’s state of flux
Even after most of Latin America had become independent, Puerto Rico, along with Cuba, remained a rich colony of Spain, trading in sugar, coffee and tobacco. The island was finally handed over to the U.S. in 1898 after the Spanish-American War and has been in flux ever since.

As Puerto Rican as a what?
The tiny coquí frog has become such a symbol of Puerto Rico that locals say "Soy de aquí como el coquí" (I'm as Puerto Rican as a coquí).

Puerto Ricans first, and Americans second
“We are Puerto Ricans first, and Americans second,” says my old friend Anton Clemente, who has picked me up in his SUV. “Of course, everyone in North and South America is American, but we are proud to be U.S. citizens too.”
