TRVL Tips Soaking up every drop at Marianne Wine Estate

The region surrounding Stellenbosch in South Africa is synonymous with wine production, and its landscape of rolling green hills are littered with elegant wine estates.

The region is an essential stop on any wine lover's itinerary thanks to its mediterranean climate, spectacular scenery, and, of course, top-notch wines. While Cabernet Sauvignon is the Cape Winelands’ most notable export, you will also find yourself sipping on favorites such as Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Chenin Blanc.

Many visitors opt for a tour of different estates, but if you're looking to soak up every last drop there is another option. At many estates not only can you sample their wares, you can also spend the night. During our road trip through South Africa we indulged in a night's stay at Marianne Wine Estate, a boutique winery located north of Stellenbosch.

We arrived on a crisp spring evening and were welcomed with a wine tasting on the estate’s sun-drenched terrace. The tasting included their outstanding Floreal wine, which happened to be served at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday celebration hosted by the Queen of England. Our accomodation was located in what was formerly the owner’s villa which boasted an earthy colored interior decorated with traditional African artwork and furnishings.

The following morning breakfast was served on the terrace, and there was just enough time for a dip in the pool before setting off to explore the town of Stellenbosch.
