Royal Crescent Hotel and Spa, Bath
The Georgians really went to town when building up the city of Bath in the 18th century. The Grand Pump Room, Pulteney Bridge and the Circus are all splendid buildings, but the Royal Crescent is probably the pick of Bath’s particularly impressive bunch. We know what you’re thinking, and yes – there’s a five-star hotel situated at number 16. Regal and luxurious in equal measure, and with plush rooms and rich interiors, a stay at the Royal Crescent Hotel and Spa is well worth splashing out on. However, splashing around in the spa’s relaxation and Vitality pools probably isn’t to be encouraged – but then you’re there to relax, after all. Unwind in the sauna and steam room, book yourself a Hot Stones Massage or other treatment, and then head back to the main building for a spot of afternoon tea. Bliss!

GLO Hotel Kluuvi, Helsinki
To sauna is a way of life in Finland, so it wouldn't be right to compile a list of great hotels with spas and not feature Helsinki, the capital. Lucky we did then. For good value, a great location and a sauna-happy spa area, you can't go far wrong with the GLO Hotel Kluuvi. This four-star hotel boasts no fewer than three different saunas: a eucalyptus-fragranced grotto steam sauna, a Turkish hammam and a traditional Finnish sauna. You can never have too many saunas, right? The Finnish agree: there are an estimated two million private saunas in Finland, which for a population of just over five million is pretty impressive.

Ursa Hotel and Spa, Madrid
The chic Ursa Hotel and Spa in Madrid serves up peace and tranquility in Madrid’s otherwise energetic city center. Black and white photographs of old Madrid adorn the walls, the rooms have big windows letting in plenty of natural light, and the Natura Bissé spa is top-notch. Hop in and out of the sauna or hydromassage pool for a couple of hours, enjoy an indulgent citrus scrub, or treat yourself to one (or several) of the spa's other specialist treatments that change according to the season. Just remember, though, as you settle in for a magnetic mud treatment, that when you visit a city as vibrant as Madrid, you're supposed to leave your hotel sometimes, too.

Indeed, Vanity Fair described their spa as a “place to write home about.” The range of treatments includes customized massages, wellness soaks and Champagne Shimmer pedicures, while the spa’s 30-minute ‘In the Moment’ treatments are perfect for those New York revelers who just need a quick pick-me-up before hitting the town.

Enjoying a great central location on the Pest side of the Danube river, this intimate boutique hotel might not boast the same range of wellness treatments on offer at other, more expensive hotels, but its Turkish bath, sauna and whirlpool tubs are immensely gratifying nonetheless. Feeling the effects of a night spent engaging with the city’s ruin pub culture? Soak and steam at the hotel for a couple of hours, and you’ll be back out savoring the city’s atmosphere in no time.
