Shawn Lam, a native of Malaysia, moved to New Zealand in 2011 to get a fresh perspective. Originally intending to stay for a couple of years and then find a new place to call home, he immediately fell in love with the country, and two years became six. Now, he can’t think of moving away in the near future.
Living in New Zealand certainly has an advantage — it offers a particularly good springboard for exploring islands in the Pacific. One of Shawn’s favorite recent trips was exploring, by bike, villages and lush paddy fields in Bali’s mountains. His group followed up the adventure with a spa day to treat their achy muscles. Later this year, he plans to use TRVL to book some time to immerse himself in Japan. He says, “I love Japan because its isolated history has created a unique culture that is so different from anywhere else.”

After seeing TRVL advertised on Facebook, Shawn decided to sign up and see what it’s all about. Since then, he’s made sure his friends and family in Malaysia know he is a TRVL Agent when they ask about visiting New Zealand. His father recently came down to Christchurch and was looking for a hotel with particular requirements, like secure parking for his rental car. Shawn works in software full time and decided to put his analytical mind to work with TRVL on the side. Analyzing what little details the client is looking for is important when selecting lodging, and with this knowledge, it was easy to make the right recommendations for his dad.
Shawn has been promoting himself on social media to widen his network of clients. His advice to TRVL Agents just starting out? “Focus on people you know—friends and family—because they already trust your recommendation. I find it helpful to emphasize that it doesn't cost them [extra] to use TRVL.”
