It is impossible to spend more than five minutes in Aegean Turkey without seeing the glass blue eyes – or nazar boncugu – sold as a defense against the "evil eye".

While they have no religious significance, nazar boncugu are given as gifts on momentous occasions such as a wedding or the birth of a child. They will be pinned to the clothes of a baby, no matter the beliefs of the family, as a tradition few parents would be brave enough to ignore.
